Question 1

How many days do I need in Amsterdam?

Accepted Answer

Two to three days covers the canal ring, Jordaan, the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank House and a canal cruise. Add a day for Zaanse Schans windmills, Haarlem, or Keukenhof in spring.

Question 2

Where should I stay in Amsterdam?

Accepted Answer

The canal ring and Jordaan are central and pretty but pricey; the Museum Quarter suits families and art lovers; De Pijp is lively with good food. Staying in Amsterdam Noord, Oost or near a metro stop is cheaper and quick to reach the centre.

Question 3

How do I get from Schiphol to central Amsterdam?

Accepted Answer

Trains leave from the station under the arrivals hall and reach Amsterdam Centraal in about 15–20 minutes, every few minutes during the day. Tap in with a contactless card or buy a ticket from the yellow machines. Bus 397 is better for Museumplein and Leidseplein.

Question 4

When can I see the tulips?

Accepted Answer

Keukenhof gardens are open from late March to mid-May, with the fields in full colour usually mid to late April depending on the weather. Book a timed ticket with transport; weekends and King's Day week are busiest.

Question 5

Is the Anne Frank House worth it and how do I get tickets?

Accepted Answer

It is a quiet, moving visit of about an hour. Tickets are only sold online for a fixed time slot and are released ahead of time; they sell out quickly, so book as soon as your dates are fixed. There is no ticket desk at the door.

Question 6

Is Amsterdam safe at night?

Accepted Answer

Central Amsterdam is generally safe in the evening. The Red Light District is busy and policed but attracts pickpockets and rowdy groups; photography of windows is not allowed. Take care crossing cycle lanes in the dark.

Question 7

Is cycling a good idea for visitors?

Accepted Answer

Yes if you are a confident cyclist. The traffic is fast and locals expect you to follow the rules. If you are unsure, start with a guided bike tour or ride in Vondelpark and Amsterdam Noord before tackling the canal ring.
